‘I’m a hairdresser – stop doing this one hairstyle, it causes damage'

If you’re experiencing hair loss and can’t get to the bottom of why your hair is thinning and damaged, one hairdresser has shared that it might have to do with the hairstyle you’re putting your hair in every day.

We all have our hair-washing routines and our oiling method down, and we’ve figured out exactly what works for us as individuals, but you may be undoing all that hard work by putting your hair up in a specific way.

“I’m a hairdresser, and I’m going to show you probably the most damaging way that you can wear your hair,” Rachel Valentine said on TikTok.

She said that “some of us are probably guilty of doing this every single day,” and it could be the reason your hair isn’t in its desired condition.

“It is this,” Rachel said, as she demonstrated putting her hair up in a “messy bun” with a bobble.

“I know that shoving your hair up in a messy bun is sometimes the quickest thing to do to get your hair out of your face, but it is so damaging in so many ways,” she told followers.

Why, you may ask? Rachel said: “Firstly, it is super tight, so the tension is gonna be on these areas here [around the hairline at the side], so if you get traction alopecia like me, this is a no-go.

“Secondly, our poor ends, especially if your hair is bleached, are gonna be so prone to breaking in a style like this.

“They’re all caught up, they’re all intertwined, and when you take it out, it’s probably gonna be super knotty.

“Thirdly, a lot of people do this when their hair is wet, which is even worse. Our hair is so fragile when it’s wet, and especially in a style like this, it’s gonna cause so much damage.”

In the comments, people said they needed to stop using this hairstyle – but admitted they found it really hard not to revert back to it.

One hairdresser said: “My toxic trait is doing this every day but with silk scrunches and thinking that makes it okay. I’m a hairdresser.”

“Me every day for a billion years and wondering why my hair is thinning and damaged,” a woman joked.

Someone even penned: “I literally wear my hair like this every day! it's bleached and I do it while it's wet. Fix me please.”

According to HairMD: “Choosing the right hairstyles, like loose braids, ponytails with scrunchies, and low buns, can help prevent further hair loss. If you're experiencing significant hair loss, it's important to consult a dermatologist or trichologist. They can help identify the cause and recommend the best treatment for your needs.”
