In her forthcoming and timely new book, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman, celebrated actress and model Brooke Shields reveals a disturbing medical incident where a surgical procedure was performed on her vagina without her knowledge or consent.
According to a recent interview and book excerpt shared with Us Weekly, Shields details how she initially consulted a surgeon after her gynecologist suggested that a labiaplasty procedure—which involves shortening the labia—could address the persistent discomfort, chafing, and bleeding she had experienced throughout her life.
Shields, who pursued the surgery for medical rather than aesthetic reasons, explains that she paid out-of-pocket since insurance wouldn't cover it. However, upon regaining consciousness post-surgery, her doctor informed her that he had included a “little bonus”—an unrequested and unwanted vaginal rejuvenation procedure.
The acclaimed performer compared the unauthorized procedure to a sexual assault and revealed that she struggled to discuss the incident with her spouse, Chris Henchy.
“I'd be lying if I said I'm not embarrassed to share this very intimate information,” an extract from Brooke's book reads. “But, if we are to change the way we approach and talk about women's health, then we need to bring up the uncomfortable but very real issues. Shame is no longer an option.”
Addressing the vaginal rejuvenation procedure, also known as vaginal tightening, Shields stated, “It felt like such an invasion — such a bizarre, like, rape of some kind.”
She astutely points out that the surgeon presumed they were doing her a favor by performing the non-consensual procedure, perpetuating the misguided notion that all women must inherently be dissatisfied with their vaginal tightness.
“[The surgeon] legitimately proudly explained to me that he, you know, threw in a little twofer [meaning two-for-one],” Brooke explained. “Nothing pointed toward this need to be tighter or smaller or firmer or younger, especially there.”
The unauthorized procedure, which cannot be reversed, reportedly left both the actress and her gynecologist extremely upset.
Shields reveals that she opted not to pursue legal action against the surgeon, explaining, “I thought, I don't want anybody else telling me what I have to do.”
