A24's erotic thriller Babygirl has finally landed in cinemas and fans may recognise a familiar face in its star-studded cast.

Released on January 10, the hotly-anticipated film follows a passionate fling between a powerful CEO (played by Nicole Kidman) and her much younger intern (portrayed by Harris Dickinson).

Although the leading duo command most of the screen time, their co-stars Antonio Banderas and Sophie Wilde are given ample room to shine.

Wilde, who previously worked with A24 on the critically acclaimed horror film Talk To Me, steps into a completely different role here. The Australian-Ivorian actress plays Romy's (Kidman) sharp-eyed assistant, Esme, who boldly confronts her boss about the inappropriate relationship.

As moviegoers tune into the steamy affair, we take a brief look at actress Sophie Wilde's life, including her rise to fame and hit Netflix show that was swiftly cancelled.

Early life

Born February 22, 1998 in Sydney, Sophie knew she wanted to be an actress from as young as five years old.

Now 26, the movie star recalls watching Audrey Hepburn's 1953 romantic comedy, Roman Holiday, on her parents' VHS and deciding she wanted to pursue performing.

"I watched Roman Holiday and said, ‘That’s what I want to do,'" she told AnOther Magazine in 2024.

Her mother, an Ivorian grief counsellor and father, an Australian visual artist, have been instrumental in helping the actress achieve her dreams and she hails them as her biggest support system.

Sophie studied at The National Institute of Dramatic Art, in Sydney, and graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting.

Nepal tragedy

Before completing her studies, Sophie and her father Simon went "missing" during the 2014 Nepal snowstorm disaster, which engulfed the Annapurna region, killing at least 43 people.

Just 17 at the time, Sophie's family had not heard from the pair for over a week. However, the duo eventually contacted their family to reveal they were safe, with Patrick, Sophie's grandfather telling the ABC in October 2014: "[Simon] and Sophie are both OK and they’ll be back in Kathmandu and flying home to Australia on Saturday."

Rise to fame

Sophie's rise to fame has been, in her words, "surreal." The actress only has eight credits on IMDB but she has already become a recognisable face in the industry.

The 26-year-old notably featured in BBC One's crime drama You Don't Know Me, starring opposite Queenie actor Samuel Adewunmi.

She went on to appear in the widely acclaimed horror drama, Talk To Me, in which she plays Mia, a grief-stricken teenager who becomes fascinated with conjuring spirits.

One year later, she took on another sombre teenage role in Netflix's Everything Now. Similar to her previous works, the coming-of-age drama was praised by fans and critics. The series garnered an 83% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes with audiences awarding it a 90% score.

Sophie portrayed Mia, a 16-year-old who creates an ambitious bucket list after spending spending time in a rehab centre for an eating disorder. Viewers praised the drama's candid depiction of mental health struggles and how they can impact day-to-day life.

Despite the rave reviews, the series was cancelled after just one season. Even so, Sophie has jumped from strength to strength in her career and received a coveted BAFTA Rising Star Award nomination in 2024, named alongside Jacob Elordi and Ayo Edebiri.

Following the premiere of Talk To Me, the Babygirl star described her career trajectory to NME as "the most surreal year of my life."
