Internet sleuths reveal the celebrity friend who no longer talks to Reese Witherspoon after ‘roast’

Internet sleuths have claimed to discover the Hollywood actress that no longer speaks to actress Reese Witherspoon.

In an interview promoting her new film, You’re Cordially Invited, the Legally Blonde actress said that a friendship with one of her famous colleagues had ended after she roasted the actress during an awards night.

Witherspoon, 48, said she had been asked by a friend to present her with an award, however, the Oscar winner said she “had never been” to that particular awards ceremony, and had wrongly assumed it was a roast, she told People on Thursday.

“So I got up, and I roasted her,” she said during the joint interview with Will Ferrell.

After misjudging the “elegant and classy” British awards show for a roast, Witherspoon said she had even brought up embarrassing stories and when the pair had laser hair removal.

While the Hollywood star did not name-drop the actress she made the speech for, entertainment news site Just Jared reported that the celebrity Witherspoon had roasted was Titanic star Kate Winslet.

The speech was said to have been given during the 2007 BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards, where Winslet, 49, was awarded artist of the year.

“We’re not friends anymore. I’m not even kidding, we’re not friends anymore. I think she doesn’t like me anymore,” she told People.

“I thought it was so funny, and I just had the wrong audience.”

The speech has since resurfaced, revealing exactly what Witherspoon said that may or may not have rubbed Winslet the wrong way.

“I always wanted to be a European movie star, wear giant sunglasses, elaborate neck scarves, smoke hand-rolled cigarettes and have savoir-faire and gravitas,” Witherspoon said in the speech.

“Imagine my good fortune when Kate Winslet moved into my neighbourhood, rang my doorbell and said, ‘Darling, Sam [Mendes] is off shooting, and I believe our children are the same age. Could they possibly have a play date and oh, by the way, it’s almost 9 o’clock and I’ve had nothing to do drink, do you have any wine?’”

Witherspoon praised Winslet in the speech but also joked about her “pee[ing] all over herself in front of Harvey Keitel” in movie Holy Smoke.
