After a relatively serene initial week down under, I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here has now showcased its first major tiff, as campmates Dean McCullough and Alan Halsall clashed following the group's recent infringement of the rules.
In earlier episodes, audiences saw radio presenter Dean move from the primary encampment to the 'junkyard', a setup that turned out to be more sumptuous than what new entrants Maura Higgins and Reverend Richard Coles led their peers to believe. Upon his arrival, Dean was also roped into aiding them in a clandestine mission.
The task at hand was to lead the rest of the camp into believing they were roughing it; success meant a delicious fast food feast for all. The intrigue peaked in tonight's instalment, when the trio failed to fool their campmates, reports OK!
Following the task, Dean opted for some shuteye. Meanwhile, chores awaited attention around the camp. Camp bosses Tulisa and soap opera star Alan Halsall had earlier divvied up duties.
Jane was tasked with fetching firewood, but soon protested, "I can't do it on my own." Noticing Dean was dodging his share of the work, Alan attempted a wake-up call, eliciting a sluggish reaction from a groggy Dean who barely responded to Alans query, " You don't fancy it? No?"
Faced with Dean's absence, Alan partnered up with Jane to avoid leaving her solo in the task. However, as Dean eventually roused to help, he dismissively told Alan: "You can go back now." Alan stated: "I was trying to wake you up as soft as I could."
Dean countered with: "Listen to me. If you're gonna wake me up, you need to give me a minute, alright? It takes a couple of minutes for my contact lenses to get back working again, alright, so you don't need to turn around to me and say 'do you not fancy it? ' OK? And then turn around and walk away."
As Alan reasoned: "I've listened to you, Jane was halfway down here, that's why I went..." Dean interrupted: "Ok, I get that, but you need to give me a minute, mate."
The atmosphere in the camp may intensify as viewers continue to speculate, some suggesting Dean's behaviour has ruffled feathers among multiple campmates. The DJ has faced four consecutive trials, quitting twice by uttering the dreaded phrase "I'm a celebrity, get me out of here," to the evident disappointment of hosts Ant and Dec.
On one occasion, Dean emerged from a trial with four stars, and some spectators noticed that Danny Jones of McFly seemed less than enthused, failing to smile or acknowledge Dean's effort. Fans have vocalised agreement with Danny's unsaid criticism.
Further drama ensued when it came to light that Dean had hidden teabags, breaching camp rules. He was caught on camera attempting to sneak them into the kettle. As a result, after Melvin Odoom succeeded at a challenge, the camp was penalised by losing half the cupcakes he had earned.
I'm A Celebrity continues tomorrow at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
