Jason Donovan hits out at 'misleading' reports after claims of fan disappointment

Rocky Horror star Jason Donovan has shared a clarification after an article appeared alleging he was a "no-show" at a recent schedule performance.

Donovan, 56, shared the post on his official social media account to his 146,000 followers.

It read: "I saw the BBC article about my 'no-show' for Rocky Horror in Blackpool last Saturday. While the article itself is more balanced, the headline is misleading."

"I was never scheduled to perform on Saturday 23rd – I had a prior commitment that had been pre-agreed with the producers," he continued.

"This was noted on Rocky Horror's official website and the venue's website before last week's performances."

Donovan wrote: "To the dedicated fans who came to see me and were disappointed; I am truly sorry. Your support means the world to me, and I am committed to showing up for you."

He ended the post by saying: "Thank you all for your understanding and continued support. Peace and love, Jason."

The BBC article's headline read 'Fans fume over Jason Donovan Rocky Horror no-show' before quoting audience members who said they "felt let down" and were "disappointed."

It read: "They claimed there was no mention of his day off in any of the promotional material they had seen while booking for the show, which is on a UK tour."

"A statement from the star's management said he had 'never been contracted' for that particular show as he had a prior engagement," the article explained.

Donovan has built an impressive career starring in hit musicals including Joseph and the Technicolour Dream Coat, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Sweeny Todd.

He began playing Frank-N-Furter in the touring UK stage show of The Rocky Horror Show from August 2024 having completed a successful run in Australia in 2023.

Donovan began his career as an Australian soap actor on hit TV series Neighbours alongside Kylie Minogue playing iconic couple Scott and Charlene before moving to the UK where he continued his acting and singing career.

Donovan and Minogue dated from 1986 until 1989 and maintain a friendship. 

Donovan sent a message to Minogue after she shared a series of throwback photos to mark her 56th birthday in May, including some featuring Donovan.

"Happy Birthday Charlene love Scott," he wrote, alongside a rolling on the floor laughing emoji.

He is married to Angela Malloch and the couple shares three children.

The couple met on a previous touring production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show where Malloch was working as a stage manager.

Donovan has credited his wife with helping him overcome substance abuse.
