How Did Jay Leno Injure Himself?

The former Tonight Show host sustained a handful of injuries after he fell down the side of a steep hill while walking to dinner ahead of his performance in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“I’m a little beat up,” Jay told Inside Edition in a video interview uploaded on November 19, 2024. “Fell 60 feet — boom, boom, boom, boom.”

Jay, who wore an eye patch in the clip, said that he broke his wrist and “lost my nail on the finger.”

“I am all black and blue from 60 feet of hitting rocks,” he said, adding that the rocks “hit me in the eye.” Jay explained that the specific injury led him to wear an eye patch because his eye was swollen.

Jay Leno Was in Good Spirits After Sustaining the Injuries

After he suffered the fall, Jay explained that he made it to the restaurant and headed to the bathroom to check out his injuries. Despite sustaining injuries, Jay still managed to give his performance and he told the outlet that he planned to see a doctor soon.

Shortly after the video of Jay discussing his fall was uploaded, several fans took to social media to send him their well wishes. “What a gracious man. To be in pain, looking like he does and still took time to take a photo with a fan and giving a smile. That’s a good human,” one person wrote via Instagram. Another added, “Well, can’t say Leno isn’t tough. Walked it off like a champ.”

Two days after the incident took place, the Burbank Fire Department issued a statement explaining that they were dispatched to an “emergency medical call” at 12:28 PM on November 12, 2022. They “assessed and treated” one adult male patient, who was eventually transported to a local Emergency Department.

Jay broke his silence on the matter while issuing a statement to Variety on November 14, 2022. “I got some serious burns from a gasoline fire. I am OK,” he said at the time. “Just need a week or two to get back on my feet.”

Dr. Peter Grossman, who treated Jay, later insisted that the Sandy Wexler actor was doing “good” in light of his injuries and he anticipated a speedy recovery. “As I’m getting to learn about Jay, I don’t think it’s going to be months,” he told Inside Edition on November 16, 2022, adding that Jay was scheduled to undergo surgery that week. “I think he’s the type of guy that’s going to move forward.”

Jay received treatment in a hyperbaric chamber, which Grossman explained was used to “decrease swelling.” He said of the treatment, “It helps increase blood flow with good oxygenation and it helps decrease bacteria.”
