Actor Jean Smart on Wednesday urged upcoming award shows to cancel their telecasts and give what would have been their profits to victims of the fires engulfing Los Angeles.
Smart, who on Sunday won a Golden Globe for her role on “Hacks,” headlined her plea on Instagram with the word “ATTENTION!”
“With ALL due respect, during Hollywood’s season of celebration, I hope any of the networks televising the upcoming awards will seriously consider NOT televising them and donating the revenue they would have garnered to victims of the fires and the firefighters,” the “Designing Women” alum wrote.
The novel idea received numerous positive responses, including a “You’re my Hero” from actor Bonnie Somerville. But some expressed concern that the shows would have nothing to donate without the ad revenue created by televising them. One commenter suggested that the award shows be used as fundraisers in a telethon setup.
Some of the shows approaching are the now-postponed Critics Choice Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the Grammys and of course the Oscars. The latter’s nomination announcement ceremony was already delayed a few days to Jan. 19 due to the fires.
A blaze ignited in the Hollywood Hills Wednesday night as wildfires from the Pacific coast to Pasadena had killed at least five people and resulted in evacuation orders for at least 130,000, The Associated Press reported.
