Jennifer Garner shared some heartbreaking news amid the Los Angeles wildfires.
During an interview with MSNBC alongside World Central Kitchen‘s Chef José Andrés on Friday, the 52-year-old actress revealed to reporter Katy Tur that she lost one of her friends. According to Jennifer, her pal “didn’t get out in time” as the wildfires in the Pacific Palisades ravaged her neighborhood. Choking up, she said:
“I did lose a friend, and for our church, it’s really tender so I don’t feel like we should talk about it yet. I did lose a friend. She didn’t get out in time.”

So awful. Sadly, the L.A. County medical confirmed that at least 11 people have died amid the fires. In addition to the fatalities, thousands of residents also have lost their houses. Jennifer, who has lived in and around the Palisades for 25 years, even expressed that many of her own friends’ homes had been destroyed:
“My heart bleeds for my friends. I mean, I can think of 100 families, and there are 5,000 homes lost. I can — without even [thinking] — I could just write out a list of 100 friends who lost their homes.”
Because of this, the 13 Going on 30 star feels “almost guilty walking through” her still-standing house so much so that she’s determined to lend a helping hand as much as possible now:
“You know, what can I do? How can I help? What can I offer? What do I have to offer with these hands and these walls and the safety that I have?”
This week, she was seen volunteering alongside Chef José to feed firefighters and evacuees. It’s amazing how she’s working to help her community during such a difficult time. Jennifer continued:
“It is an incredible thing to watch. World Central Kitchen and Chef José just come in and… ‘We’ve got you. We’ve got this handled. Don’t worry.’ I’ve lived in and around the Palisades for 25 years, so I just think all of us, we want to get our hands into working, somehow, to be helpful. And because of my work with Save The Children, we have a relationship with the chef, and I was able to just say, ‘Can I be with you for the day? What can I do to help? Put me to work.’”
Our heart breaks for Jennifer and anyone else who lost a loved one or their home this week. It’s all so devastating to see. Watch her entire emotional interview (below):
