Hollywood actor Jim Carrey's older sister, Rita, has died at the age of 68. The tragic news was confirmed in a heartfelt social media post from her husband, Alex.
Rita, who was always vocal about her affection for her famous younger brother, was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her passing on November 14.
In a touching Facebook tribute, Alex wrote: "Rita and I have been together for 16 years and we just got married last year in July in an outdoor wedding that she has always wanted. Rita always had a loving soul and wanted to help everyone even total strangers."
He added: "As everyone knows Christmas was Rita's favourite holiday actually it was everyday for her and she started a fundraiser to help a local charity."
A candlelight vigil is planned for December 7 in Ontario, honouring the author, public speaker, and radio host. Alex's emotional tribute concluded with: "Goodbye my lover. Goodbye my friend. Until we meet again. You really did have the Time of your life. Your bestest friend and husband, Alex."
Rita was one of four siblings, including Jim Carrey, John, and Patricia, reports the Mirror.
When Jim rose to stardom following his roles in blockbuster films like The Mask, Rita proudly declared him as "the world's greatest actor and comedian."
Rita was no stranger to hardship, having endured the pain of losing her son Marty at the age of 25 in 2005.
Rita poured her heartache and experiences growing up in a family facing tough times into her moving book "Growing Up Carrey," which includes poignant reflections such as: "When I look back at it, I didn't realize we were really homeless. I just thought we were camping. My parents made it a good time. That's what life was like."
Her death follows the loss of their brother John in 2019, distressing many fans and friends who took to Alex's post to express their grief. One user shared their sorrow: "So sorry for your loss, Rita and I worked together at Giant FM, she was a wonderful woman with incredible passion and warmth."
Another mentioned: "I'm so sad to hear this. Rita was a wonderful, sweet and talented person. So loved by everyone. My condolences to all of her family and friends."
A third added: "My very deepest condolences Alex, I am so saddened to hear this. We were at your wedding celebration and Rita was so happy with you, and when she sang that night everything was so perfect. Rita will be deeply missed and I am so lucky to have known her and call her friend."
Bob Cowan, a former TV host, lamented on X, the social media platform known previously as Twitter, saying: "RIP Rita Carrey. My dear friend passed away yesterday from a lengthy illness. [Rita] was first and foremost a great Mom, a talented singer, radio host and always proud big sis to [Jim Carrey]. I will forever miss her big laugh and smiles."
