John Mulaney’s new Netflix talk show is taking shape — and it’s not much different from the test case he pulled off in 2024.
The comic was on-hand for the streamer’s Next on Netflix event Wednesday in Hollywood, and he confirmed that, come March 12, he’ll launch Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney.
Like his Netflix is a Joke stunt, Everybody’s in L.A., the show will tape in Los Angeles and will feature a couch of eclectic guests, live viewer phone calls, Richard Kind and Saymo — the food delivery robot. “This will be the one place where you could see Arnold Schwarzenegger sitting next to Nikki Glaser sitting next to a family therapist with music by Mannequin Pussy,” said Mulaney. “That’s just a brief sampling of guests. We don’t know if we can lock in Mannequin Pussy, but we are in talks with them.”
“This is a really fun experiment,” he added. “Not since Harry and Meghan has Netflix given more money to someone without a specific plan.”
Everybody’s in L.A. ran for six nights and featured visits from comedy royalty like Jerry Seinfeld, Will Ferrell, Jon Stewart and David Letterman and more eclectic guests like Marcia Clark, Ray J and Flea. There were also pre-taped segments and comedy sketches. By Mulaney’s own admission, it was bizarre, which is why it worked so well and why it’s coming back. “We had a hypnotist. We had an expert on coyotes in Los Angeles. We had a palm tree expert. We had an earthquake expert. We covered most all natural disasters that take place in California except for one. We just weren’t ready.”
(That last remark, it should be said, played very well in room.)
Everybody’s Live is set for a twelve-week run to start, though it’s hard to imagine it not going further should both parties be pleased with the results — even if it’s not the most novel idea for either.
“It’s one of those shows that neither Netflix nor I really needed to do,” Mulaney added. “ I never wanted to host a talk show and they were getting out of the talk show game. It was the perfect moment to do this.”
