Something is going on in Katie Holmes’s shoe closet: By Glamour’s estimate, the actor has styled 90% of her winter looks with the same off-white sneakers. If we didn’t know better, we’d say that Holmes has replaced the rest of her footwear—boots, her beloved ballet flats, kitten heels—with the Medalist Low sneaker from Autry, because lately she can’t seem to leave her house without them. She’ll swap her coat or bag, but her Autry sneakers are a near constant.

What is so special about these shoes that they have become her official winter uniform? Well, for starters, they’re not your typical big-name brand, like Adidas or Reebok. The more niche American label adds an immediate touch of cool and proves that Holmes has some insider fashion knowledge. (Or she’s on a great PR distribution list.)

Holmes, like any woman, appears to be in love with her latest purchase. Who doesn’t get that itch to wear a new addition to your closet for weeks straight?

Besides the novelty, there’s a good reason the Autry sneakers have become Holmes’s favorite: They’re the best complement to the grunge looks she’s been serving lately. There is no shortage of wide, masculine jeans; plaid shirts; beanies; and striped T-shirts in her rotation. As a woman who was a teenager in the ’90s, she knows very well how to reinterpret a grunge aesthetic for 2025 and beyond.

Plus sneakers have a neutral-enough look that makes work with more formal garments, like a long wool coat.

Remember Holmes’s Penny Lane coat? Yes, this ’70s piece is a great pairing for the Medalist.

The Medalist model by Autry is available in different colors, however Katie Holmes chose the simplest (and most versatile) colorway, which has a touch of contrast at the toe. The style is a real closet staple for everyday wear that is still in fashion today but that could be repeated in a decade’s time too.

According to some reports, Autry was founded in Dallas in 1982 and launched its Medalist model in 1985. The style was celebrated in the sports world, but, despite promising beginnings, the company never became a behemoth in the vein of Nike, which was founded around the same era. The brand relaunched in 2019, bringing the Medalist back to stores.

Given Holmes’s co-sign, we have a feeling that the brand will be around for a long time still.
