Keke Palmer looks back at an unsavory experience in her career in her upcoming memoir. Titled Master of Me: The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative, the work reflects on her time starring as Zayday Williams in Scream Queens. She describes her set experience including racist remarks from an unnamed white costar—whom she refers to as “Brenda”—and her difficult time with series co-creator Ryan Murphy.
Per EW, Palmer attempted to calm everyone down on set as “Brenda” and another coworker weren’t seeing eye-to-eye by suggesting that everyone “have fun and respect each other.” “Brenda” said in response, “Keke, literally, just don’t. Who do you think you are? Martin fu**ing Luther King?”
“It was such a weighted thing that she said, but I didn’t allow that weight to be projected on me, because I know who I am,” 31-year-old Palmer told EW. She also explained why she kept the actress anonymous adding, “I’m no victim. That’s not my storyline, sweetie. I don’t care what her ass said. If I allow what she said to cripple me, then she would.”
The Hustler‘s star also claims that Murphy called her unprofessional after Palmer scheduled another work obligation on her day off.
“It was kind of like I was in the dean’s office,” she explained. “He was like, ‘I’ve never seen you behave like this. I can’t believe that you, out of all people, would do something like this.’” Although she apologized, Palmer says a costar alluded to the situation being worse than she anticipated. Keke explained how the incident might be why she has not worked with Murphy since.
“I said, ‘Ryan talked to me and I guess he’s cool, it’s fine,’ and she was like, ‘It’s bad,’ trying to make me scared or something, which was a little irritating,” she detailed.
