Kendrick Lamar has taken responsibility for the rap supergroup Black Hippy never finding its footing.
On “Heart Pt. 6” from his new album GNX that was released as a surprise on Friday, Lamar reflected on the origin of the Black Hippy group that consisted of him, Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock, and Ab-Soul. Toward the end, he addressed what happened to the project.
“Now it's about Kendrick, I wanna evolve, place my skillset as a black exec / I jog my memory, knowing Black Hippy didn't work 'cause of me / Creatively, I moved on, with new concepts in reach,” he raps.
Throughout the entire song, he delves more into story and his memories of working with each rapper.
About Ab-Soul, Lamar admitted, “His words legendary, wishin' I could rhyme like him / Studied his style to define my pen.”
Lamar also claimed that Schoolboy Q didn’t rap for him when they first met, and at one point, their only focus was making sure that Jay Rock got signed to Warner Records.
After coming together for a tracks like the remix to Lamar's "Swimming Pools," fans were hoping for a full album, but it never materialized. Those hopes were dashed for good when Lamar left Top Dawg Entertainment in 2022, essentially ending the group.
Black Hippy ended up reuniting onstage at Lamar’s The Pop Out: Ken & Friends concert in June.
Lamar’s thoughts about Black Hippy aren’t the only important revelation on GNX. On its first song, “Wacced Out Murals,” Lamar acknowledges that the announcement of his upcoming Super Bowl Halftime Show upset Lil Wayne, who really wanted to perform in his hometown.
“I used to bump Tha Carter III, I held my Rollie chain proud/Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down,” rapped Lamar, later adding, “Got the Super Bowl and Nas the only one congratulate me, all these n****s agitated I’m just glad it’s on their faces.”
Elsewhere on the same track, Lamar addresses Snoop Dogg's sharing of the “Taylor Made Freestyle,” made by Drake as a diss to Lamar a few months ago. “Snoop posted ‘Taylor Made,’ I prayed it was the edibles / I couldn’t believe it, it was only right for me to let it go,” rapped Kendrick, suggesting there are no hard feelings.
Lamar’s GNX features 12 new songs (surprisingly, no “Not Like Us") and prominent production from Taylor Swift’s frequent collaborator Jack Antonoff.
