Kirk Franklin joins Rocsi Diaz and Deion Sanders on their weekly We Got Time Today series and explained how he landed a feature on GloRilla‘s Glorious debut album in the song “RAIN DOWN ON ME.” The collaborative track fuses Hip-Hop and gospel and also features Maverick City Music, Kierra Sheard, and Chandler Moore.
“This is what I’m talking about Kirk,” affirms Diaz. “You just take it to the next level. You embrace the younger generation and they love you,” she continued before asking about the collaboration.
“We were at the Grammys two years ago and we ran into each other on the red carpet. She was really excited to meet me and I was shocked that she was excited to meet me,” began the 54-year-old in response.
“I was like ‘So what you trynna do you trynna collab?'” to GloRilla’s approval. “They reached out a few months later after that. She had a record she thought I would be cool on and yeah. We shot a video for the song last month. It’ll be coming out real soon.”
Earlier this year, the Memphis rapper also shared her side of the collaboration with Charlamagne Tha God, detailing how the song originally had a Kirk Franklin sample.
“My people had sent it to him,” explained the Grammy-nominated rapper of sharing the idea with the “Stomp” performer. “He did it so quick and so fast. I was so happy.” She continued to elaborate on her longstanding desire to do a gospel record, noting “RAIN DOWN ON ME” was created over a year before the album was released.
“Everything that I said on there, I actually felt… I knew I wanted a gospel record on the album. They helped me come up with the name of the album too… Kirk Franklin brought it together.”
We Got Time Today premiered on Tubi last month and brings the expertise of the two cohosts front and center as they add context to pop culture and trending news with real conversation.
