Kroger Food Recalls Issued for 12 States: Full List of Products Impacted

Retail grocer Kroger currently has several food recalls in place, affecting supermarkets in 12 states.

Newsweek contacted Kroger for more information on the recall via email.

Why It Matters

Recalls are issued because the products in question could be harmful in some way. Often it is due to trace chemicals or substances that are not intended to be consumed making their way into the preparation process. For example, the Lay's Potato Chips recall, which also affected Target, was prompted by milk being found in the product, which could affect people with allergies.

What to Know

The recalls issued by Kroger since December 7 have impacted 12 states, leading to some products being taken off of stores in these areas. The chains Fred Meyer, QFC, Pick 'n Save, Metro Market, Mariano's and Smith's have all been affected by the recalls. These chains are located in 12 states; Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Illinois, Wisconsin, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Montana and Wyoming.

What Foods Are Being Recalled?

Lay's Classic Potato Chips were recalled on December 16, with Kroger saying that the product could contain allergens that were not intended in the product. This recall was matched by Target.

A Frito-Lay representative previously told Newsweek: "Frito-Lay issued a recall for a limited number of 13 oz. bags of Lay's Classic Potato Chips that may contain undeclared milk. The product included in this recall was distributed in Oregon and Washington. No other Lay's products, flavors, sizes or variety packs are recalled.

This recall affects QFC and Fred Meyer stores, which are operational in Alaska, Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

Connie's Cheese Pizzas were recalled on December 13, after their thin crust product were found to have plastic inside. Kroger described the product as "contaminated with foreign matter."

"This recall alert, which is being conducted under the full cooperation of the FDA, is being issued out of an abundance of caution in the event that a product remains in a consumer's freezer. The pizzas are no longer available for purchase. Consumers who have purchased these Pizzas are urged not to consume them. They should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase for a refund," read the company announcement issued in mid-December.

This recall affects Pick 'n Save, Metro Market and Mariano's stores, which are located in Illinois and Wisconsin.

Newsweek has contacted Palermo Villa, Inc via email.

Heber Valley Cascade aged raw milk cheddar was recalled on December 7, after a potential contamination with E.coli. Kroger said: "The product may be contaminated with E. COLI and, if eaten, could result in severe illness to those individuals who may consume this product."

Anyone who purchased these items are eligible for a full refund if they return the product to the store. Newsweek has contacted Heber Valley Artisan via email.

This recall is in place for Smith's stores, which are operational in Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming.

What People Are Saying

An FDA official has previously told Newsweek: "The U.S. food supply remains one of the safest in the world. The occurrence of recalls and outbreaks means that manufacturers, importers and distributors are monitoring for issues and taking action when they detect a problem. Consumers should know that recalls and outbreaks indicate that the problem has been identified and is being addressed."

What Happens Next

These recalls are still active as of January 2025. Consumers with questions about the recall can contact their local FDA complaint coordinator, or Kroger's Help Center.
