Legendary actor Bill Murray made for one of his many surprise appearances

A legendary actor stunned a theatre audience after showing up out of the blue to sing for them.

Groundhog Day and Rushmore star Bill Murray, 74, is notorious for appearing at random social events with little or no announcement. He has been spotted serving tequila shots in bars, attending college house parties and now covering Bob Dylan on-stage at a small theatre in North Carolina, US.

Those attending the Neighborhood Theatre in Charlotte were in for a shock as the Ghostbusters veteran took to the stage and performed one of the all-time greatest songs, Like a Rolling Stone. His appearance left fans at the theatre and those who saw a clip of his performance online stunned, with many calling Murray a "legend".

Murray was seen halfway through the song in a post to Twitter/X where his animated performance was backed by musicians already at the venue. Those in the crowd could be heard singing along with Murray, who appeared at the venue where rock band The Cold Stares were performing.

One user has since dubbed Murray a "legend" while another said the performance of the Dylan classic was "awesome". A third was left unsurprised at Murray's random appearance, with some almost expecting the veteran actor to show up in the most unlikely of places. They wrote: "Of course he did haha, amazing." A website dedicated to the random encounters and appearances of Bill Murray, dubbed "Bill Murray Stories" collates the strange encounters with the actor.

He has been seen at liquor stores, baseball games and airports across the globe and each time members of the public spot him they usually have a strange story to tell. Murray has even delivered a White House Press Conference because he just happened to be there to pick up his Mark Twain Prize from President Barack Obama in 2016.

Murray also had some incredible advice for those attending a bachelor party he crashed in South Carolina, FarOutMagazine reported. According to one attendee recalling the encounter, Stephen, Murray had plenty of advice for the young bachelors on how to find and keep love. He apparently told the group: "If you have someone that you think is The One, take that person and travel around the world.

"Buy a plane ticket for the two of you to travel all around the world, and go to places that are hard to go to and hard to get out of. And when you land at JFK, and you’re still in love with that person… get married." Murray also performed poetry to builders at an under construction Poets House out of the blue and was spotted singing karaoke with Clint Eastwood at a golf tournament in Pebble Beach, California.
