Universal Pictures and the Lego Group are linking up for three live-action movies centering on the toy line of interlocking blocks.
Directors Jake Kasdan (Red One), Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) and Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) are each developing a separate Lego film. The projects are in the works and have yet to announce titles or loglines.
Kasdan’s feature has a script from Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul (The D Train) after Matt Rider and Kevin Burrows (The Pickup) wrote a previous version. Lego Group’s Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians serve as producers, as do Kasdan and Melvin Mar for Detective Agency.
Jenkins helms a film from a screenplay she co-wrote with Geoff Johns (Wonder Woman 1984). Jenkins produces for Wicious Pictures, alongside Wilfert and Christians.
Cornish is rewriting his movie’s script after Heather Anne Campbell (Rick & Morty) wrote a previous take based on a treatment from Simon Rich (Miracle Workers). Wilfert and Christians produce.
Universal’s executive vp of production development Matt Reilly and director of production development Jacqueline Garell oversee the movies for the studio.
The Lego brand has seen previous feature success that kicked off with Warner Bros.’ The Lego Movie (2014), which was followed by such titles as The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie. Focus Features recently collaborated with the Lego Group on Piece by Piece, a Pharrell Williams biopic that is told through Lego animation and is currently in theaters.
The Lego Group is represented by WME. Kasdan is repped by WME and Sloss Eckhouse. Jenkins is repped by CAA and Gang Tyre. Cornish is repped by CAA, Independent Talent and the Davis Law Group.
Deadline first reported the news about the three films being developed.
