Liam Payne‘s cousin Ross Harris is paying tribute to the singer.

On Monday, the independent artist shared a throwback photo on Instagram of him and the 31-year-old as young boys sitting on a bed together. Along with it, he expressed:

“My young cousin. I’ve been trying to write something for a few days now, it still doesn’t feel real and probably never will.”

This has been so difficult for so many to process…

Ross went on to reflect on his relationship with the One Direction alum, which had grown stronger as they aged. He shared:

“I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time with you over the last few months, we’d become close again like the kids we were growing up together. Late night songwriting sessions, making plans to tour and travel, and practicing stupid impressions – we didn’t need much to have a good time. It’s devastating to know I won’t see you again or wake up to a late night FaceTime call (when you’d forget about the time difference) but we made a lot of memories which I’ll hold on to forever. From being 13 years old learning Maroon 5 songs to bumping into you backstage at music festivals, we were always just a couple of kids hanging out.”

How heartbreaking that they won’t get to share more time together now. But it’s also such a gift that they were able to get closer in Liam’s final days. Those will surely be very cherished memories for years to come.

The Goosebumps crooner went on to reflect on the Strip That Down performer’s addiction and mental health challenges, remarking:

“Regardless of what you were going through, and the demons you were fighting, you always wanted to help others and wanted everyone to ‘win together’. Hopefully the world will remember this above everything else. Not everyone got to know the boy behind the popstar, outside of stadiums and studios, but I count myself very lucky that I did. Rest easy little cousin, you were taken far too soon, love always”

Aw! The post was shared alongside several photos of the boys making music and singing together, too. See (below):

As Perezcious readers know, the Teardrops singer sadly passed away on Wednesday in Bueno Aires, Argentina, after jumping from his fourth-story balcony (it is not clear if the fall was intentional). According to ABC News insiders on Monday, Liam was found to have several substances in his system at the time of his death, including cocaine, crack, benzodiazepine, and “pink cocaine,” which is a mix of methamphetamine, ketamine, MDMA, and more. He’d dealt with addiction for years. Last year, he went to rehab and had been sober for a while. In fact, this relapse had reportedly only begun just days before his death.

According to a friend who spoke with the US Sun, he had to get tested when he got to Argentina on September 30. Apparently, he was trying to renew his American visa, and US embassy officials made him take a drug test. The results came in just a day before his death, and he was found to be clean and sober. Now, investigators are looking into a hotel employee who is believed to have sourced the drugs for him. Wow. Just devastating.

Addiction is such a difficult thing. There is always only so much you can do for a loved one battling these kinds of issues. Our hearts go out to Liam’s family and friends as they mourn this gut-wrenching loss.
