Liam Payne’s father, Geoff Payne, has been seen visiting the five-story hotel in Buenos Aires where his son tragically passed away on October 16. The One Direction star sadly plummeted from a balcony attached to his third-story room at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in the Argentinan capital city. He was 31.
Though details around his death remain a mystery, the British singer’s family has touched down to reportedly organise the relocation of Payne’s body back to his native England. Payne was pictured by onlooking paparazzi at the judicial morgue two days after the news broke. He is said to have officially identified his son’s remains before heading to the local prosecutor’s office to organise the transportation of the corpse.
Local authorities are currently undergoing toxicology tests to determine if there were any substances in his systems at the time of death, with their findings still pending. Results of the autopsy have been released in the interim, revealing his cause of death as internal and external bleeding and multiple sustained traumatic injuries.
The emotional visit culminated in Payne arriving at the site of his son’s passing to collect the late singer’s possessions from the hotel. He briefly stopped at the memorial shrine posted outside of the property where he appeared clearly moved by the tributes and overwhelming outpouring of love amid the family’s painful loss.
Payne was born in Wolverhampton to Geoff and Karen Payne on August 29, 1993. The pop star skyrocketed to the spotlight in 2011 when he was grouped with Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan on reality competition show X-Factor. The boy band subsequently became one of the most successful musical acts of all time before they eventually went on indefinite hiatus in 2016.
Payne’s family appeared in the 2013 documentary One Direction: This Is Us where they candidly spoke about adjusting to their son’s unprecedented fame and missing him during a demanding touring schedule. The grief-stricken family released a message in the wake of Payne’s death, saying they will remember him “for his kind, funny and brave soul”. They also asked for “privacy and space at this awful time,” per the statement.
Styles, Malik, Tomlinson and Horan have also shared messages expressing their condolences for their former bandmate. Payne’s ex-girlfriend and mother of his son, Cheryl Cole, also slammed the “abhorrent reports and media exploitation” following Payne’s passing in her message.
Payne is reportedly set to be laid to rest during a funeral ceremony slated for next month. It’s believed this will be the moment all surviving members of One Direction will reunite for the first time in almost a decade. Payne is survived by his seven-year-old son, Bear.
