A friend of Liam Payne‘s, along with two hotel employees, have reportedly been charged in connection with the former One Direction singer’s tragic death.
The friend, whose identity was withheld by Argentine media but allegedly posed as Liam’s manager, faces charges of abandonment for reportedly failing to inform Liam’s family about his recent drug relapse, according to a report by La Nacion on Wednesday, November 6.
“Police detained two hotel workers accused of supplying the drugs,” David Muir later confirmed on ABC World News Tonight, citing authorities, Nov. 6, “and raided the home of a friend, also detained.”
Police allegedly attempted to reach the friend through a contact number provided by hotel management after Liam’s fatal fall on October 16, but their calls went unanswered.
Later, a lawyer from a prominent law firm reportedly arrived to determine if the friend was facing charges, ultimately leading to the friend providing testimony as a witness.
Charged against all three people, including Liam’s friend, who allegedly neglected his duty of care towards the English singer, and now faces a potential prison sentence of two to six years for abandonment. The friend reportedly attempted to act as a witness, claiming he was present at the hotel when Liam passed away. However, hotel staff have stated that they did not see him there.
Additionally, he allegedly withheld information about Liam’s relapse from the singer’s family. Meanwhile, a former hotel employee from CasaSur Palermo and an alleged drug supplier have been accused of providing Liam with the substances later detected in his system. The hotel employee has since been dismissed from their position.
Liam passed away on Wednesday, October 16, after falling from his hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
It was later revealed that that Liam died from “polytrauma and internal and external bleeding,” noting that “a series of substances were seized from the musician’s room, which would prove a previous situation of alcohol and drugs consumption.”
Then, it was reported that Liam had multiple substances in his system at the time of his death, including “pink cocaine,” a recreational drug that can contain a mix of several other drugs including methamphetamine, ketamine and others, as well as cocaine and crack.
“Everything indicates that the musician was alone when the fall occurred, and was going through some kind of episode due to substance abuse,” read a statement from the prosecutor’s office in Buenos Aires on Thursday, October 17, per Reuters.
