LiAngelo Ball claims he has the best record deal in the music industry.
As reported earlier this month by ESPN’s insider Shams Charania, the 26-year-old shooting guard inked a deal with Def Jam and Universal Music Group. Sources also told Charania that the contract is worth $13 million, includes an $8 million guarantee, and grants full ownership of his masters.
Gelo recently spoke about the deal with Speedy Morman for Complex’s 360 with Speedy, and said he chose to sign with Def Jam after receiving offers from other record labels.
“They all reached out for real, but I don't know. Me and my team got together and we had long talks with the labels for real. We took some meetings,” Ball said around the 12-minute, 35-second mark in the video linked above.
“I'm just going what's sounding the best to me at the end of the day. We talking to them like, man to man, like, ‘We need this, this, this,’ and that's what they got done for us. And they showed love too, bro.”
“I showed them some extra music, you know, they was hype. Well yeah, I'm rocking with them, you feel me? They're my guys now,” he added.
He continued, “I own all my music and we did do it like that though. Like, my contract's professional, bro … You know how music stuff could get, bro, so I really locked in. We're not letting it go down that route and my team helped me put the best thing together. They said that's the best music contract. Don't hate me, bro. We just out here getting it.”
Although G3 said he loves seeing the different rumors of his contracts’ worth online, he wasn’t willing to share specific figures—unlike an NBA player’s contract, where salary details quickly become public.
Gelo released the music video for his breakout hit “Tweaker” on Thursday. The song debuted at No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and is still holding on to the No. 38 spot for the week of Feb. 1.
