Lindsay Lohan is back in the public eye and looking better than ever, drawing a blizzard of reactions from fans.
With a breakout performance in The Parent Trap (1998) at just 12 years old, Lohan, now 38, was one of the biggest stars of the 2000s, appearing in classics like Freaky Friday, Mean Girls, Get a Clue, and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.
But around 2007, a DUI charge and other legal battles led the young star to spend years in and out of rehab as she tried to get her substance abuse issues under control.
Britney Spears and Paris Hilton were probably the only women in the world who could compete with Lohan for notoriety at the time, with the paparazzi following her every move.
Her prison headshots, failed romances – notably with Samantha Ronson – and professional setbacks were endlessly ridiculed by the press and fans alike.
But the Mean Girls actress is in the middle of a major comeback, starring in two Netflix rom-coms just this year: Irish Wish in March and One Little Secret in November.
This summer Lohan reunited with Jamie Lee Curtis to film the long-awaited sequel to Freaky Friday, seemingly declaring to the world that she’s back for good.
But it’s not Lohan’s acting that has fans talking; it’s her ageless appearance – which one plastic surgeon on TikTok estimated to cost as much as $300,000 (£238,314).
In a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Lohan looked almost unrecognisable.
Fans can’t help but wonder if Lohan took all of that 2000s negative press attention to heart, and turned to plastic surgery to correct any and all perceived flaws to avoid any criticism as she returned to the public eye in 2024.
The actress, who welcomed a son last year with husband Bader Shammas, looked stunning in a black dress as she chatted with Cohen and her Mean Girls co-star Lacey Chabert on the late show.
But she also didn’t look like Lindsay Lohan, but rather an artist’s interpretation of Lindsay Lohan, or possibly Lindsay Lohan with a TikTok filter on.
One X user, @imakedonskaya, wrote: ‘I urgently need the number of her cosmetologist and surgeon.’
While @KeithSmiling marvelled: ‘Wait how did she look older at 28 than 38?’
@QueenObscene_13 speculated about what, if anything, the star has had done, writing: ‘Plastic surgery is amazing. Lip lift, Botox, filler, and possibly upper bleph to say the least. She looks great!’
Commenters under a YouTube clip of the interview had similar thoughts, with @tamauroget3950 writing: ‘Lindsay looks amazing. Like two different people from the person she was.’
@jlew3275 agreed: ‘How does Lindsay look younger now than 10 years ago ?!!!’
@mixeduh also wanted to know what her secret to eternal youth might be, posting: ‘OK someone tell me what Lindsay did? She looks great but it looks like she did something with her nose and eyes! Asking because WOW, everything looks so youthful.’
@mightymolly made a critique that many have directed at famous women in recent years, writing: ‘To me she just has Hollywood face. She was such a unique natural beauty, now she’s a clone of whatever. But yeah kudos to her plastic surgeon. It’s a massive improvement from her real housewives face.’
‘Hollywood face’ or ‘Instagram face’ are terms that have been used over the last five to 10 years to characterise the increasing frequency with which famous women are getting cosmetic enhancements done to their faces to try to live up to increasingly homogenous beauty standards.
Jia Tolentino described this new ‘goal face’ in the New Yorker as a ‘single, cyborgian face. It’s a young face, of course, with poreless skin and plump, high cheekbones. It has catlike eyes and long, cartoonish lashes; it has a small, neat nose and full, lush lips.’
Tolentino blames the advent of face-changing filters, social media, and an increasingly visually obsessed culture for people turning to plastic surgery to achieve ‘Instagram face.’
Lohan is just one of many female celebrities seeking to attain ‘Instagram face,’ with every Kardashian, Nicole Kidman, the Hadid sisters, and many, many more also looking notably different following rumoured cosmetic procedures.
Tolentino puts the phenomenon well, explaining that for famous women, plastic surgery can feel like a business decision: ‘As those born with assets—natural assets, capital assets, or both—it can seem sensible, even automatic, to think of your body the way that a McKinsey consultant would think about a corporation: identify underperforming sectors and remake them, discard whatever doesn’t increase profits and reorient the business toward whatever does.’
Of course, it’s impossible to know for sure if Lohan has had work done, and there’s little point in speculating.
YouTube user @Dana wrote a comment that notes the possibility that the change in Lohan’s looks could just be put down to good health: ‘Lindsay looks AMAZING, but I don’t appreciate how everyone is more focused on whatever she *might* have had done to “look good” instead of the glow she now radiates due to very clearly reaching a very happy and healthy place in her life (and she had to do that all by herself).’
While Lohan hasn’t spoken extensively about her new appearance, she did tell Allure earlier this year: ‘I’ve tried Morpheus, IPL, and lasers,’ she says. ‘I try not to do them too much, but I’m always interested in what else is out there, what else is coming out.’
Whether Lohan’s new ‘Instagram face’ is natural or not, we’re just happy to see her back in the spotlight – and who can blame her if she needed a little surgical enhancement to feel comfortable there?
