Welsh rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit made a bold career move earlier this year, transitioning from rugby union stardom in the UK to the competitive world of the NFL.
The 23-year-old signed a three-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs, the reigning Super Bowl champions, but was cut from the 53-man roster in August after training camp.
Now, Rees-Zammit finds himself with the Jacksonville Jaguars as part of their practice squad, determined to keep his NFL dream alive.
Taylor Swift offered unexpected support
Rees-Zammit recently revealed an unexpected source of encouragement during his NFL journey-pop superstar Taylor Swift.
During an interview on RugbyPass TV's Walk the Talk, the Welshman shared that he attended Swift's Eras Tour concert in Cardiff, where he received a handwritten note from the singer.
Swift, who has been in a relationship with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, wished him luck for his NFL training camp.
"It was pretty crazy getting a letter from Taylor Swift," Rees-Zammit told RugbyPass TV, adding that the note is safely stored at his home in Cardiff.
Despite not making the final roster with Kansas City, Rees-Zammit has fond memories of his time there, cherishing the support from both his teammates and their partners.
Rees-Zammit also spoke about the tough reality of being cut from the team, describing the process as "cut-throat." After training with the Chiefs, he received a text message informing him that he had not made the final squad, a common practice in the NFL.
"If you don't have guaranteed money, they can cut you at any point," he explained.
While he had positive conversations with the Chiefs' staff, he ultimately didn't make the team due to their strong receiving group.
Now with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Rees-Zammit is embracing his role on the practice squad and remains optimistic.
"I'm as happy as ever at the Jags," he said, determined to continue pursuing his NFL dream.
