Louis Theroux makes dramatic career change and joins BBC rival for new projects

Louis Theroux has made a huge career change and is stepping back from the BBC.

The broadcaster is now reportedly stepping back from interviewing celebrities for the BBC amid working on an upcoming project for a rival streaming platform. Louis, 54, has made numerous documentaries for the BBC over the years and he most recently fronted Louis Theroux Interviews. The show, which launched in 2022 and last aired the following year, saw him speak to various celebrities.

There are no plans for the journalist to make any more episodes of the BBC Two show. He won't be making any more Louis Theroux Interviews episodes "for the foreseeable future". The outlet adds that his production company Mindhouse is making a new celebrity series for streaming platform Netflix instead. Louis co-founded the production company in 2019 and has fronted several projects that it has released since.

A source told The Sun: "Louis is very much seen as a BBC star, having launched his career there in 1998 when he was an unknown. And his two interview series in 2022 and 2023 were very much seen by execs as him doing what he does best." The source then concluded: "But now it seems he won't be going back to the format, potentially for years."

Mindhouse has released several projects through the BBC. They include the three-part docuseries Boybands Forever, which launched last year. Louis was credited as an executive producer on the series, which featured interviews with the likes of Simon Cowell and Take That's Robbie Williams. The production company's relationship with the BBC looks set to continue though. Rumoured follow-up docuseries Girlbands Forever is expected to be released through the same broadcaster at some point later this year.

Over the five years since it launched, Mindhouse has worked with other broadcasters too, including having released a few projects through Sky. Their most recent collaboration, Dart Kings, was released through Sky Documentaries last week. The production company has also worked with Channel 4, Netflix and Prime Video, among other platforms, previously.

The presenter's production company is also behind the Louis Theroux Podcast, which debuted two years ago. Each episode of the podcast involves an "in-depth" conversation with a high-profile individual. The first series launched in 2023, with the second and third series released last year.

Earlier this week, Louis announced the release date for the podcast's fourth series. He revealed in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the latest episodes will be released from January 14 onwards as part of the new series.

He said in a video message: "Hello, it's me, Louis Theroux, here to inform you that I'm back with a new series of my podcast. [...] Join me again on Tuesdays as I sit down with a smorgasbord of remarkable people from all walks of life."
