Macy Gray once 'refused' to exit Masked Singer stage - 'I'm keeping the head on'

The Masked Singer star Macy Gray is making headlines after she recently stormed off set, but previously show bosses have struggled to make her leave after she "refused" to exit the stage

The American soul singer appeared on the Australian version of the show back in 2021, where she refused to leave the stage after she was voted out. Judge Dave 'Hughesy' Hughs spoke to 2Day FM's Morning Crew about the incident.

He explained that after Macy was forced to reveal her identity and exit the stage, she put her foot down and decided to make a stance: "Macy Gray had such a passion for The Masked Singer that when she was told that she had to leave the show, which you saw last night, she refused to leave the show."

"She said, "No, I'm continuing in the show," and there had to be a discussion which went for quite a while as to, "No, you have to leave." She said, "No, I'm not leaving."

"The thing is, we can't do the end of the show unless the head comes off!" His Masked Singer co-star Ed Kavalee chimed in: "So, she still had the head on, and they're saying, "Hey, Macy-slash-Atlantis, we need you to take the head off so you can go."

Kavalee said that Gray quipped: "No, I'm keeping the head on," as the stumped Masked Singer crew tried to figure out what to do. According to Hughesy, Macy took a lot of convincing before she was persuaded to remove her costume and leave the show.

Four years on from The Masked Singer Australia incident, Gray caused chaos for the series once again after she appeared on the UK version on Saturday [11 January]. She lost to her opponent Bear during a sing-off segment and she was clearly not best pleased.

Upset by their decision, Macy - dressed as Toad In The Hole - strutted off stage in a huff as presenter Joel Dommett and the judges looked on in shock. Guest judge Maya Jama couldn't believe her eyes as she gasped while Toad walked away.

Davina McCall was equally as confused as The Masked Singer crew tried to figure out what was going on. Joel cheekily quipped a "goodbye" to Macy as she turned her back on the audience and marched down the tunnel, without so much as a wave.
