The Masked Singer fans have called out Jonathan Ross' "awkward" remark.
On Saturday night's episode [11 January], the American singer looked far from pleased when she was revealed as the character Toad in the Hole. Macy seemed less than thrilled to come back on stage and after Macy's face-off with Bear, telly favourite Jonathon Ross commented that her elimination was sort of expected since they were "pretty certain" about who she was due to her iconic voice.
This didn't appear to sit well with Gray, who later stormed off, leaving Joel and fellow judges Maya Jama, Mo Gilligan, and Davina McCall at a loss. The audience couldn't believe their eyes, and Twitter blew up with reactions—some dubbed Gray a 'sore loser', while others found it downright 'hilarious'.
The air was thick as Jonathan Ross stepped up during a tense moment on the show, earning him praise from audiences for steering the situation. Facing a rather unresponsive Macy Gray, Jonathan smoothly transitioned into host mode, pressing on about her music clues and particularly, her track featured in Shrek – to which Macy admitted she couldn't recall any of it.
The singer quipped, "I've been around a long time and now I'm a toad," but even her curt replies didn't deter Jonathan. He aimed to inject some levity, jokingly apologising for her having to appear alongside host Joel in his quirky holiday attire.
Audiences were quick to call Jonathan an 'utter professional', with comments flooding in hailing his efforts to salvage the segment. One viewer commended: "Watching Jonathan Ross go into professional presenter mode to rescue the nightmare of a sulking Macy Gray, unexpected on a Saturday night."
Others joined the chorus of approval, one saying: "Outstanding from Ross when the rest of the panel completely clammed up, consummate professional," and others expressing relief that "Thank god for the utter professional Mr Ross you saved the day while the other judges hid away."
Hailed as possibly the most uncomfortable unmasking yet, fans couldn't stop giving kudos to Ross for navigating through the awkwardness: "Well that was probably the most awkward unmasking to date for the #MaskedSingerUK - Macy Grey was NOT a happy Toad! And bless him Jonathon Ross just kept asking her questions!"
Even those who aren't usually his fans conceded: "As much as Johnathan Ross annoys me - he held that tense ending together very well."
