TLC show My Strange Addiction explored the wild obsession of Keyshia, a pregnant woman from New York who was bizarrely addicted to sucking and chewing on dirty nappies
An expectant mother from Queens in New York revealed an unusual and controversial addiction: she's hooked on sniffing, hoarding and chewing soiled nappies. And the more urine they contain, the more she loves them.
"It's got to have pee," Keyshia admitted, pulling a used nappy from her stash. "The heavier it is, the better it smells." For her, the potent scent and taste are irresistible, and she compares it to sour candy, saying: "It's that kind of flavour you can almost taste just by smelling it."
Her unusual habit began in 2012, and it's become a constant in her life as revealed on TLC's show My Strange Addiction. Keyshia appeared on the programme in 2014 and she said she doesn't just indulge at home – she carries dirty nappies everywhere. It comes as the show also visited a woman who loves to sting herself with bees.
"I have one in the kitchen, one in my drawer, some in my handbag, even a stash in the car trunk," she said.
Pregnant with her first child at the time, her fiancé was losing patience with her bizarre craving especially as she continues to source used nappies from friends and even strangers. But Keyshia is unapologetic, saying the addiction is a source of joy and comfort.
In the show she unabashedly pulls out a nappy mid-conversation and starts chewing. "No, really, it tastes good," she says with a grin. "I love it, it just tastes amazing."
Fiancé Jerome reveals to the camera: "I find a lot of diapers, like all over the place. There's a diaper [he picks one up in the corner of the room]."
Keyshia heads to her friend Kim's house. Kim has twins herself and says: "It's [the addiction] very annoying because she doesn't care what time it is, she'll wake my baby up to take the diaper that's on the baby. It's nasty."
Keyshia was said to have collected more than 25,000 diapers to feed her addiction but she isn't the only one featured on the show with a peculiar obsession. Vladimir, a 50-year-old man, has taken to attaching leeches to his body in the belief that they heal and purify him.
After a car accident three years ago, Vladimir began using leeches as a form of therapy and was shown to regularly apply up to 12 at a time – losing significant blood and risking infection. Despite the risks, he insists it makes him feel revitalised and younger... okay then!!!
