Macy Gray was a contestant on The Masked Singer U.K., but her reaction to her recent elimination from the show has fans talking.
The 57-year-old singer stormed off the stage in a "Toad in a Hole" costume following her elimination on the Saturday, January 11 episode of the singing competition. Judges Jonathan Ross, Davina McCall, Mo Gilligan, and Maya Jama were left stunned, their mouths wide open, after Gray's sudden exit.
Host Joel Dommett awkwardly addressed the situation before informing the studio audience that the masked contestant would return to the stage. Gray was welcomed back with applause from the audience as they chanted, "Take it off," urging her to reveal her identity. Once unmasked, the singer was praised by the judges and viewers before being interviewed by Dommett. However, the Grammy Award-winning singer appeared upset about her elimination and gave short, one-word answers to the host's questions.
When Dommett asked if she had fun on the show, the R&B singer simply replied, "Yeah." She was also asked about the challenge of performing in a toad mask, to which she responded, "You know, I've been singing for a long time, and now I'm a toad." Fans of the show have taken to the comments section of a clip of the elimination, shared by Dommett, to express their thoughts on Gray's reaction to being cut from the show.
"That was soooo awkward to watch and to be honest quite rude of her!" wrote one fan, while a second added, "She acted like a spoilt kid that wasn't getting her own way!! Very funny though, but very awkward ." A third fan chimed in, writing, "Apparently, we didn't see the worst of it. They were trying for 30 minutes to get her to come back out!!!" A fourth fan mentioned Gray's appearance on the Australian version of the show, writing, "I read that she did the same sort of thing on the Australian version and refused to leave or take the mask off back in 2021."
Gray appeared on the third season of The Masked Singer Australia in 2021 and was eliminated in the sixth episode. She also competed in the 10th season of the U.S. version of the show in 2023, where she made it to the finals and finished in fourth place.
The singer rose to fame in the late 1990s with her debut album On How Life Is and the single "I Try". The album went triple platinum in the U.S. and was nominated for three Grammys in 1999. Gray took home the award for best female pop vocal performance for "I Try" that year.
