Madonna’s highly anticipated biopic may take a surprising new direction. The Queen of Pop, 66, recently hinted at a potential pivot from the big screen to the small screen, igniting a flurry of excitement among her fans.  On Monday, Nov. 18, the Grammy-winning icon took to Instagram to share her thoughts on the future of her life story project.

Alongside a carousel of photos featuring friends like designer Willy Chavarria, multimedia artist Jess Cuevas, and artist Nadia Lee Cohen, Madonna opened up about the challenges she’s faced in Hollywood.  “After struggling for days in LA, listening to producers and agents tell me why I couldn’t make my film… I realized that everything in my life is going to be challenged,” she wrote. “No easy rides for me. I guess I should be grateful… It forces me to think outside the box. I did not have a normal life,” she continued.

Madonna credited time spent with her creative circle as the inspiration she needed to forge ahead. “We all agreed that we need to be even more fearless!!!”

At a crossroads

The “Like a Prayer” singer asked her 19.8 million followers: “Should I make the story of my life into a series or a feature film? Think before you answer.”  The responses were mixed. Some fans championed a film, envisioning it as a cinematic masterpiece. In contrast, others saw the potential of a series to dive deeper into the many layers of her storied career and personal life.

Madonna’s close friend Debi Mazar, who is expected to be portrayed in the project, offered her two cents in the comments. “I think a film or series would be amazing… but [what] about the book first? Then no one can get it wrong,” she suggested.

Madonna has been working on bringing her life story to the screen since 2020 when Universal announced plans for a biopic with the superstar at the helm as director. The script was initially co-written with Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody, though Cody later departed the project.  At the time, Madonna described the project as a deeply personal endeavor. “I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer — a human being, trying to make her way in this world,” she said in a statement.

While Madonna has yet to confirm whether her story will unfold as a film or a TV series, she remains as fearless and determined as ever. Fans can expect her signature boldness to shine through on the big screen or streaming platforms.
