Man Criticizes Parents' $100 Reward Offer for Weight Loss

5 hours ago 1

A 31-year-old man on Reddit who is trying to lose weight was outraged after his parents offered him big bucks to shed the pounds.

The man prefaced his post by explaining he previously weighed 280 pounds but has been on a journey to lose weight, losing 40 pounds at his best.

"But I continued to fluctuate in weight over the last few months (I am back up to 255). I know why. It's because I am not taking it as seriously as I did at the start of the year. I go off-diet almost every weekend now so I have 'plateaued,' so to speak," he wrote.

"My mother just called me within an hour of this post and told me that they came up with an idea to give me incentive. $100 for every 10 pounds I lose between now and new year. She knows that my target goal is to be back down to my college weight of 180. So she said that's $500 you could get and reach your goal!" he continued.

The man felt "offense" and "anger" when he received the offer.

"She was talking about how she convinced my dad to go along with it when I cut her off. I told her to save her breath because my answer is absolutely not. If it had been anyone else, I would have told them to go [redacted] themselves and shown them my favorite finger. Instead, I told her that my weight loss is my only incentive I need and that she came across as patronizing and how offensive that was," he shared.

"She could immediately tell that I was very much upset by her proposal and backtracked by apologizing but also said that she thought I would have liked it since I'm normally motivated by money. (Also felt insulted by that, too). After I hung up and started to calm down, I wondered if maybe I had been too harsh," the man concluded his post.

Users in the comments section had mixed reactions.

"Parents trying to help but fumbling the bag is a tale as old as time," one person wrote.

"I don't get it, why were you so outraged? You say the weight loss is all the incentive you need, but clearly that isn't true or else there'd be no explanation about how you haven't prioritized it like you used to," someone else shared.
