A man drove through a car dealership's storefront in Utah after he was denied a refund for his vehicle, police say.
Michael Lee Murray, 35, purchased a car from the Tim Dale Mazda Southtowne dealership in Sandy, Utah, on Monday. Hours later, he drove into the front window display and entrance to the store. The affidavit states that he wanted his money back and to return the vehicle, as reported by local news outlet KSL and confirmed to Newsweek by the Sandy City Police Department.
Newsweek reached out to the dealership for comment.
"Murray had purchased the vehicle from the dealership earlier in the day and had taken it off the lot and was not pleased with the vehicle and wanted to return it for a full refund," the Sandy Police Department told Newsweek. "Murray drove back to the dealership, not long before the call to police, demanding his money back."
Murray had requested his money back and to return the vehicle. He told police the dealership "sold him a lemon, and they would not give him his money back," according to the arrest report.
"The dealership explained the sales contract was "as is" and a refund was not going to be granted, Murray stated he was going to drive the vehicle through the front door," the Sandy Police Department said. "Murray then exited the dealership and got into his vehicle and within minutes drove the vehicle through the front of the building."
Murray drove his newly purchased vehicle into the front doors of the building shortly after 4 p.m. on Monday.
"Murray's vehicle was completely inside the building," the police booking affidavit reads. "The front doors were now inside the building, there was glass shattered all around where Murray's vehicle was and some pieces of the door and door frame had hit another vehicle that was in the showroom, causing damage to the side of that vehicle as well."
The damage is estimated to cost $10,000, with the damage to the building and to another vehicle that was on the indoor sales floor exceeding $5,000.
A video, which has surfaced on social media, shows Murray and his Subaru Outback going straight through the doors at the Tim Dale Mazda Southtowne location. After breaking through the glass, he crashes into the front desk reception area. The desk is shown then with pieces broken off and items strewed about the floor.
The Sandy City Police Department said the video was originally taken by one of the employees or customers at the Tim Dale Mazda Southtowne.
Murray then exits the car and says "I told you motherf******." After someone yelled to call the police, Murray says "call the cops, they got nothing."
He takes off his jacket and puts it on the roof of the car. Murray then rolls up his shirtsleeves and walks out the door before walking back in and asking "is there anybody under the car."
Someone told Murray there was no one there. Several of the car dealership's employees told the police that they had to move out of the way to avoid being hit.
Murray grabbed his jacket and walked out again.
People who were at the Tim Dale Mazda Southtowne turned the car off and can be seen in the video walking through glass remnants.
Murray was taken to the Salt Lake County Jail and was charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and economic interruption. Criminal mischief is a felony while the other charges are class A misdemeanors.
The Salt Lake County Jail told Newsweek Murray was released on Tuesday.
