What's New
Matt Gaetz has made a last minute legal attempt to stop the House Ethics Committee from releasing their report on him.
Gaetz filed a lawsuit against the House of Representatives Committee on Ethics and Representative Michael Guest, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Ethics, claiming that the report is "unconstitutional" in its "attempt to exercise jurisdiction over a private citizen through the threatened release of an investigative report containing potentially defamatory allegations, in violation of the Committee's own rules, House Rules, the Due Process Clause, and the Privacy Act of 1974."
The committee report on Gaetz is expected to be released today. Leaked copies of the report seen by CBS reportedly found there is "substantial evidence" that Gaetz paid for sex and bought illegal drugs. These are all claims that Gaetz denies.
Why It Matters
This lawsuit may prevent the ethics report from being released by the committee today.
Gaetz's injunction claims that the report is unconstitutional as he is a private citizen, and therefore should not be subject to a report.
He has claimed that the committee continued to investigate his actions after he resigned from Congress, which would be a violation of their mandate.
The claims of wrongdoing could also hinder Gaetz's future political career.
