Matter 1.4 update extends device support, could improve Nest Thermostat outside of Google Home

2 weeks ago 2

A new update to the Matter standard, version 1.4, brings support for even more new device types, as well as expanding support for thermostats in a way that would benefit the Nest Thermostat.

Matter 1.4 is now available to apps and devices, with the standard update further expanding types of devices that are supported by Matter. New additions include Solar Power, Batteries, Heat Pumps, and Water Heaters. There are also improvements for existing energy devices such as EV chargers, as well as to in-wall switches.

One particularly interesting update is to connected thermostats, which will get updated capabilities with Matter 1.4.

The CSA explains that thermostats can now show additional controls and use presets as well.

Thermostat clusters add support for scheduling and preset modes like vacation and home/away settings. Presets can be triggered through motion detection, integrated with other devices, and even automation based on calendar events.

In theory, this would be a welcome upgrade for Google’s Nest Thermostat lineup, which is rather limited if you connect it via Matter to anything other than the Google Home app. But it remains to be seen when, if at all, Google will make the needed updates.
