Matthew Perry’s Mom Says He Had a ‘Premonition’ That Something Would Happen to Him Before His Death

Matthew Perry’s mom, Suzanne Morrison, reflected on one of her eerie final conversations with the Friends actor in a rare interview nearly one year after his death.

“He went through a period, interestingly enough, just before he died when he was showing me one of his new houses,” the former press secretary, 76, told Today’s Savannah Guthrie in a preview of their interview shared on Friday, October 25. “He came up to me and he said, ‘I love you so much, and I’m so happy to be with you now. And I’m so …’”

Though she didn’t think anything of their conversation at the time, looking back on it, Suzanne realized there was something strange about what her son said to her.

“It was almost as though it was a premonition or something. I didn’t think about it at the time, but I thought, ‘How long has it been since we’ve had a conversation like that?’ It’s been years,” she continued. “There was an inevitability to what was going to happen next to him, and he felt it very strongly.”

Suzanne concluded, “But he said, ‘I’m not frightened anymore.’ And it worried me.”

The full interview, which also features Matthew’s stepfather, Keith Morrison, and other family members, is set to air on Monday, October 28 — the one-year anniversary of the 17 Again star’s death. After airing the preview on Today, Savannah, 52, said that the interview was “a powerful conversation,” noting that it was the first time Matthew’s family has spoken out in depth since his passing.

“There’s so much pain and sorrow, but [they] also have a real sense of purpose about the work that he was doing, helping others get sober,” the TV host continued. “It was the purpose of his life, and so there’s some stuff to announce around that too.”

Matthew was found dead at 54 years old on October 28, 2023, at his Pacific Palisades home after an apparent drowning in his jacuzzi. However, the beloved actor’s cause of death was later ruled as the “acute effects of ketamine.” He had been receiving ketamine infusion therapy to treat anxiety and depression, but his last treatment had been a week and a half before his death.

An investigation into his death found that the ketamine that Perry ingested prior to his drowning was not legally prescribed by a doctor and led to the August 15 arrests of Dr. Mark Chavez, Dr. Salvador Plasencia, Erik Fleming, Kenneth Iwamasa and Javeen Sangha, a woman known as “the Ketamine Queen.”

Chavez, 54, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute ketamine on October 2. Meanwhile, Iwamasa, 59, and Fleming, 54, also both pleaded guilty in the case. Sangha, 41, and Plasencia, 42, pleaded not guilty.

Ahead of the anniversary of Matthew’s death, Keith, 77, and Matthew’s sister Caitlin Morrison reflected on his legacy.

“I have this treasure of getting to keep him very, very close to my life all the time, which is wonderful,” Caitlin, 43, told HELLO! Canada on Wednesday, October 23, referencing her role as executive director of the Matthew Perry Foundation of Canada. “I like I’m sitting right next to Matthew, working with him every day on something that was important to him.”

Keith told the outlet that Matthew “would like to be remembered for doing something to help people suffering from addiction.”

“Anybody who has lost a child will tell you that, even if you are in some way prepared for the possibility, it’s shattering,” he added. “What we have decided to do is hang on to that determination and try to do something useful.”
