Max George has undergone major surgery after being hospitalised earlier this month and doctors discovered he had "issues with his heart" - but the former The Wanted singer is now "100% in the best place"
Max George 'pops the question' to Maisie Smith with an onion ringMax George the pop heartthrob, has revealed he's had a pacemaker fitted after facing a serious heart scare. The Wanted singer took to Instagram with a post-surgery snap, showing off his scar and telling his followers: "Say hello to my little friend! Given the last 10 days, this is the best Christmas present I could've ever wished for."
He detailed the complex procedure, which lasted about two and a half hours due to collapsed veins, but praised the NHS staff for their incredible work: "Pacemaker is in. Operation took around 2 and half hours. The main issue being some of my veins had collapsed where the wires were meant to go... But the surgeons and nurses at the NHS have been incredible. I owe everything to them. The surgeon kindly put my pacemaker just underneath a very special tattoo of mine.. So I'm sure it's being looked after."
Max's 'special tattoo' commemorates the birth date of his late bandmate Tom Parker, who passed away in 2022 after a valiant fight against glioblastoma.
The Manchester lad also mentioned further tests for inflamed lymph nodes on his lungs but remained optimistic, saying: "Few more tests to do due to inflamed lymph nodes on my lungs, but that'll be easy work! Time to rest and then tackle life full on once again. Thank you for all your support. It's meant a hell of a lot to myself and my family. Much love, Max."
The NHS defines a pacemaker as "a small electrical device" that "sends electrical pulses to your heart to keep it beating regularly and not too slowly". This device is directly connected to the heart, with wires known as pacing leads inserted into a vein and threaded through blood vessels to the heart, reports the Mirror.
Max has been in hospital since earlier this month, keeping his worried fans updated on his condition as doctors work tirelessly to stabilise his heart rate. On December 12, he shared on Instagram: "Yesterday I felt really unwell and was taken in to hospital. Unfortunately after some tests they've found that I have some issues with my heart."
"I have a lot more tests to determine the extent of the problems and what surgery I will need to get me back on my feet. It's gonna be a difficult few weeks / months... and Christmas in a hospital bed wasn't exactly what I had planned! But, as always, I'm surrounded with love and support from my wonderful partner Maisie, her family, my family and friends.. and I'm 100% in the best place."
