Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have been labelled "box office poison" following the poor reception of their latest Netflix documentary, Polo, which has bombed with fans and been heavily criticised by reviewers.
This latest setback puts their future with the streaming platform in jeopardy, as they have yet to achieve a significant success since 2022.
Attention will now focus on Meghan's upcoming cookery show, scheduled for next year. Notably, Polo has received minimal promotion from Netflix, the Sussexes, and its participants.
According to marketing expert Tony Case, people are distancing themselves from the show to avoid association. In his interview with the Daily Beast, Case stated: "The critics have universally slammed the show. Harry and Meghan are box office poison. Of course everyone is running away from it, in every direction, so to as to not pick up the stench of this colossal bomb."
Harry and Meghan make only a brief appearance in Polo, despite being credited as executive directors, suggesting they may have anticipated its poor reception, reports the Scottish Daily Express.
Case cautioned that, from a branding perspective, it's uncertain whether anything can be done to reverse the evident apathy towards the Sussexes, adding: "They set out to conquer America, but nobody here, it turned out, found them or what they're peddling to be particularly compelling."
Meghan's latest venture, tied to her American Riviera Orchard brand, is under intense scrutiny. Insiders hint that Netflix is becoming impatient with the Duke and Duchess, having invested heavily with minimal return.
An insider described Meghan's show as "make or break". The Sussexes' $100 million contract with Netflix, inked in 2020, is due for renewal next year.
