Meghan Markle posted to her personal Instagram account on January 7, sharing the sad news that her dog, Guy, had crossed over the rainbow bridge.
The Duchess of Sussex said that she adopted her beagle in 2015. “He had been at a kill shelter in Kentucky and given a few days to live. I swooped him up….and fell in love,” she captioned her post. Markle said that Guy was in her life for some of its biggest moments, including her engagement, wedding, and the birth of each of her kids.
“He was with me for everything: the quiet, the chaos, the calm, the comfort,” she said. She went on to say that Guy was in a “terrible accident” before she moved to the UK. He needed more than one surgery and other treatment. Markle then took a moment to thank the veterinarians who looked over and cared for Guy during that time.
With her new Netflix show coming out on January 15, Markle noted that fans will see Guy on the show.
“I hope you’ll come to understand why I am so devastated by his loss. I think you may fall a little bit in love too,” her Instagram post read.
Meghan Markle Said She Has Cried a lot After Losing Guy
Markle’s post was extremely raw as she expressed being overwhelmingly sad about Guy’s passing.
“I have cried too many tears to count – the type of tears that make you get in the shower with the absurd hope that the running water on your face will somehow make you not feel them, or pretend they’re not there. But they are. And that’s okay too,” she said.
“Thank you for so many years of unconditional love, my sweet Guy. You filled my life in ways you’ll never know,” she concluded, signing off, “As ever, Meghan.”
Markle officially rejoined the Instagram platform on January 1, 2025, sharing her first personal post since before she married Prince Harry. She has her comments turned off.
Meghan Markle Is an Animal Lover
It’s no secret that Markle loves animals — especially dogs.
She and Harry had three dogs (before Guy passed away), and they were featured on the couple’s official holiday card. Black lab Pula and another beagle named Momma Mia are a big part of the Sussex family. Both pups were also adopted.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are the most loving, sensitive and caring adopters I have ever met! We were so honored that they have been supporting Beagle Freedom Project and chose to adopt a dog who has been abused,” animal rights attorney Shannon Keith, who runs the Beagle Freedom Project told People magazine.
Guy was featured quite a bit on Markle’s old Instagram account, which was deactivated after she and Harry got engaged, per People.
