Meghan Markle ‘Spent a Small Fortune’ on Wardrobe for Comeback: ‘Got to Look the Part of a Princess’

Meghan Markle was dripping in jewels and designer duds in a trailer for her new Netflix series, With Love, Megan, and a source exclusively tells In Touch that she’s “spent a small fortune upgrading her wardrobe” ahead of her highly anticipated 2025 comeback.

“Meghan has always loved designer clothes and fancy things but the crowd she’s fallen in with in Montecito are next-level rich and that has absolutely raised the bar for her when it comes to her own style,” the insider reveals. “They all have stylists and think nothing of wearing hundreds of thousands in jewelry, if not millions, on a day-to-day basis.”

Meghan, 43, and her husband, Prince Harry, moved to Montecito, California in 2020 after stepping down as senior members of the British royal family and relocating from the U.K. to North America.

The couple purchased a 14,500-square-foot Mediterranean-style mansion that featured nine bedrooms, 16 bathrooms and luxury amenities, for $14.65 million in June 2020, three months after settling down in Los Angeles, per Variety. Montecito is the fifth most expensive zip code in the United States and is home to a host of celebrities including Katy Perry, Natalie Portman and Michael Keaton. The neighborhood is highly exclusive, with a median household income of $212,154, according to Data USA.

The source says the former Suits actress “feels the need to keep up” with her affluent neighbors as it was “also part of her brand,” and “she feels a lot of pressure to embody this royal image that she’s clinging to.”

“That means looking the part at all times. That’s why she hired an A-list stylist because she needs to exude quiet luxury at all times and that does take a lot of effort, not to mention a ton of money,” the insider concludes. “But in her view, it’s crucial to building this aspirational brand, people need to want to emulate her and that means she’s got to look the part of a Princess.”

In the trailer, Meghan showed off her luxurious taste when she was spotted wearing a $13,400 Cartier necklace, according to Page Six. In another scene, alongside her longtime friend Mindy Kaling, she layered a $395 cashmere sweater over a $1,325 crewneck, exuding elegance.

Meghan announced her upcoming Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, on January 3. Filmed in Montecito, Netflix described the show as an “inspiring series, produced by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, that reimagines the genre of lifestyle programming, blending practical how-to’s and candid conversation with friends, new and old,” per a press release shared by People.

In the series, “Meghan shares personal tips and tricks, embracing playfulness over perfection and highlights how easy it can be to create beauty, even in the unexpected. She and her guests roll up their sleeves in the kitchen, the garden, and beyond, and invite you to do the same.”

The royal shared the trailer for her upcoming show via Instagram at the time, which marked her social media return after years off the platform.

“I have been so excited to share this with you! I hope you love the show as much as I loved making it,” she captioned the footage. “Wishing you all a fantastic new year! Thanks to our amazing crew and the team @netflix. Beyond grateful for the support — and fun! As ever, Meghan.”

The end of the clip revealed that With Love, Meghan was slated to premiere on Netflix on January 15. However, amid the devastation caused by the Los Angeles wildfires, the actress decided to postpone the release date to March 4.

The new venture is part of a reported $100 million deal the couple signed with Netflix in 2020, which includes several projects produced by Meghan and Harry’s Archewell Productions. Their collaboration began in 2022 with the Netflix documentary Harry and Meghan. The docuseries not only made the Top 10 list and ranked No. 1 in the U.K., but also became the most-watched documentary premiere on the streaming platform, with a total of 81.55 million hours viewed.

Two years later, the couple released Polo in December 2024, a documentary showcasing the superstars of the equestrian sport.
