Mets $154 Million Slugger Predicted To Betray New York, Sign With AL Contender

The Pete Alonso free agency sweepstakes is reportedly down to a few teams. Among those teams, the New York Mets are the clear favorites to land the slugger. But they haven't signed him yet, so the door is still wide open for any team to come steal the Polar Bear from Queens.

After citing a report from Mark Feinsand, FanSided's Jacob Mountz recently reflected on a new suitor in the Alonso sweepstakes: the Toronto Blue Jays. Mountz predicted the Blue Jays to enter the sweepstakes and potentially sign the $154 million slugger.

"After whiffing on both (Juan) Soto and (Corbin) Burnes, the Jays are sitting on enough cash to land Alonso. The Polar Bear has been one of the top home run hitters since arriving in 2019, however, he is yet to repeat the 53-home run season that broke the rookie record set by Aaron Judge in 2017," Mountz wrote. "Nonetheless, Alonso's power is elite. He has hit 40-plus long balls in three different seasons while accumulating 16 in a pandemic-shortened 2020 season which would otherwise be equivalent to over 40 in a 162-game season."

Alonso would add a lot to this Blue Jays lineup. Toronto could place Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alonso back-to-back in the lineup, creating one of the most daunting pairings in baseball.

The Blue Jays certainly have the money to bring Alonso in after whiffing on Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes, Max Fried, and Teoscar Hernández in free agency. If they can net Alonso, it would be quite the consolation prize.
