The New York Mets built their pitching rotation on reclamation projects in 2024. Guys like Luis Severino and Sean Manaea excelled and landed themselves big contracts in free agency this winter, including Manaea re-signing with the Mets.
This offseason, the Mets have added multiple starting pitchers for the 2025 season and beyond. This leaves the future of Mets free agent Jose Quintana in question.
Quintana spent the last two years in Queens, making 44 starts and tossing 246 innings. In that span, the lefty posted a 3.70 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP. He's been consistently good with the Mets, but they're likely to part ways this winter.
Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report predicted Quintana would jump ship and head to the National League East rival Washington Nationals on a two-year, $26 million deal.
"Continued durability is not exactly guaranteed at his age, but it does soothe the nerves knowing that Quintana isn't out there trying to blow guys away. He's more about throwing 90 mph or so and getting guys to hit the ball on the ground," Rymer wrote. "It's not flashy, but it's hard to deny at this point that it works. At least well enough to make Quintana a reliable mid-rotation type, and there are few teams that don't need a guy like that."
If the Nationals can sign Quintana for $13 million a year, they would be getting quite a steal. While he's never going to blow you away, he's been consistently good. His FIP and WHIP numbers continue to indicate he could regress, but he continues to perform as a solid rotation option.
As much as the advanced analytics may indicate he will regress heavily in 2025, it's tough to argue against his consistent results. This would be a great addition for the Nationals.
