The New York Mets know they have to address the bullpen if they want to get past the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs.
Both teams are pursuing left-handed reliever Tanner Scott, one of the top relievers on the market right now. However, the Mets could switch gears to a familiar face if they can't bring Scott to the East Coast.
Jeff Hoffman is currently a free agent, and he had his best season in 2024. In 66 games, he posted a 2.17 ERA with the Philadelphia Phillies and earned himself a trip to the MLB All-Star Game.
Baseball Savant showed Hoffman was one of the best relievers in the sport in 2024. He ranked in the 96th percentile for chase rate, whiff rate and strikeout percentage Hoffman also ranked in the 81st percentile in allowing walks.
Even after his best season, Hoffman is projected to sign a contract the Mets can easily afford. He is expected to receive a two-year deal worth $12.4 million that could turn out to be a steal if he replicates his numbers from last season.
After spending two seasons with the Phillies, Hoffman is very familiar with pitching in National League East ballparks. He knows all too well about facing some of the best hitters in the game like Ronald Acuña Jr. and had many matchups with Bryce Harper in spring training.
Hoffman may not have as much attention surrounding him as Scott does currently, but he could prove to be just as effective if the Mets pivot in his direction.
