If it wasn't already obvious the the Mets and free agent Pete Alonso were serious about moving on from one another this offseason, this week could slam the door on a reunion.
Alonso's camp is "advancing" in their negotiations with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to Andy Martino of SNY.
Martino cautioned the contract is "not done yet, and no guarantee that it gets there." But compared to the stalemate between the Mets and Alonso that persisted from the end of the 2024 season into January, some movement with any club qualifies as major news.
Martino reported last week that the Mets' front office is poised to pivot to "Plan B," expecting Alonso to sign elsewhere after spending the first six years of his career in New York.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported the Mets offered Alonso a three-year contract "in the $68 million to $70 million range" before pivoting to Plan B when their offer was rejected.
Alonso, 30, hit 34 home runs last season and has hit 226 since his 2019 Rookie of the Year campaign with the Mets.
