The first base market has been quite intriguing to follow this winter. Pete Alonso and Christian Walker were always seen as the top two options on the market. The Houston Astros scooped up Walker on a three-year deal. As of Monday morning, Alonso remains unsigned.
The New York Yankees went and grabbed Paul Goldschmidt in free agency. The Cleveland Guardians traded Josh Naylor to the Arizona Diamondbacks before signing Carlos Santana for themselves. The Washington Nationals, once seen as a suitor for Alonso, traded for Texas Rangers first baseman Nathaniel Lowe.
Where does that leave the market for Alonso?
Quinn Everts of FanSided recently predicted Alonso to re-sign with the Mets and, honestly, it seems like a pretty cut-and-dry case.
"It's not the most exciting possibility for general MLB fans, but it's the option that makes the most sense," Everts wrote. "As most teams with a need at first base have filled that need in recent weeks, Alonso's market has dwindled to ... well, the Mets basically.
"Seattle is another potential landing spot for Alonso, but it's hard to fathom the Mariners spending what will be necessary for Alonso — even if that number has shrunk as other teams fill the position. At this point, Alonso back to New York feels like a given, but the contract details will be fascinating to follow."
The Seattle Mariners could take a shot at him, but there's almost zero chance Seattle can keep up in a bidding war with owner Steve Cohen and the Mets.
As Everts states, it's the contract details that will be the interesting part of this deal. After signing Sean Manaea and making a chunk of his deal deferred money, the Mets have room to sign Alonso to a pretty hefty deal this winter.
