Mets Predicted To Trade 25-Year-Old Star Infielder To Hated Division Rival

The New York Mets are seemingly closing in on a free-agency contract with first baseman Pete Alonso. If the Mets are able to bring Alonso back, it would allow them to play Mark Vientos at third base and trade from their infield depth to acquire more pitching.

Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter recently predicted the Mets would trade third baseman Brett Baty to the rival Washington Nationals.

Here's the deal pitched by Reuter that would send Baty to the Nationals:

  • New York Mets receive: RHP Cade Cavalli
  • Washington Nationals receive: 3B Brett Baty

"Third baseman Brett Baty and right-hander Cade Cavalli were both prominently featured on Baseball America's Top 100 prospect list prior to the 2022 and 2023 seasons," Reuter wrote. "The Nationals have a clear void at third base and the Mets could use more quality starting pitching depth in the system behind top prospect Brandon Sproat, so a change-of-scenery swap looks like a good move for both sides."

On the surface, the Mets don't need to trade Baty, but they would be acquiring a former top prospect to replace him at a position of need.

New York needs to add pitching, especially after taking risks on starting pitchers Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas this winter. If these two don't work out, the Mets could use a guy like Cavalli.

The Nationals could use offense like Baty, especially with the young core they have built up. Adding Baty would solidify the Nationals as one of the better young teams in the league.
