Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded on Wednesday to President-elect Donald Trump's proposal to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" by sarcastically offering to rename North America "América Mexicana."
Trump said at a press conference Tuesday morning that his incoming administration will rename the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America," calling it a "beautiful name."
In response, Sheinbaum suggested renaming North America "América Mexicana," or "Mexican America," as a Mexican founding document from 1814 that preceded the country's constitution referred to it that way.
"That sounds nice, no?" she said sarcastically.
