Free agent infielder Alex Bregman underwent an elbow procedure on the eve of his foray into free agency, Bregman's agent Scott Boras told reporters Wednesday at baseball's annual GM Meetings in San Antonio, Texas.
According to Chandler Rome of The Athletic on Twitter/X, Boras said Bregman had a bone chip removed from his elbow and should be able to swing a bat in "a few weeks." Bregman is expected to be ready for spring training.
Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle noted on Twitter/X the bone chip was removed from Bregman's right (throwing) elbow, which had been bothering him for the final "month-plus" of the 2024 season:
Bregman, 30, hit 26 home runs with a .260 batting average and 75 RBIs in 2024, the final year of a five-year, $100 million contract he signed prior to the 2020 season.
That contract extension essentially bought the Astros an extra year with Bregman, delaying his free agency one year until his age-31 season.
The two-time All-Star appeared in 145 games in the regular season for the Astros and another two in their Wild Card loss to the Detroit Tigers in October. Bregman went 3 for 8 with three singles in that series.
Bregman was recently awarded a Gold Glove Award at third base, the first of his career. He's also won a Silver Slugger award (2019) and made the American League All-Star teams in 2018 and 2019. He won the All-Star Game MVP award in 2018.
The second overall pick in the 2015 draft, Bregman has spent his entire nine-year major league career (2016-24) in Houston. He is a career .272/.366/.483 hitter who led the AL in Baseball Reference's version of Wins Above Replacement in 2019.

From 2016-19, Bregman slashed .286/.384/.527 while averaging 5.7 bWAR per season. Since then, his production has tailed off, as he's averaged only 3.9 WAR and a .262/.350/.444 slash line while being limited to 138 games per season from 2021-24.
Boras (via Rome on Twitter/X) said the Astros "clearly understand the rarity of being in four World Series and being in the postseason eight years in a row and him being a centerpiece of that."
No American League third baseman has appeared in more games at the position in each of the last three seasons than Bregman. He ranked first among all AL third basemen in fielding percentage at the position last season.

The Astros have reached the World Series four times during Bregman's time in Houston, winning twice.
Boras offered his unique brand of word play when discussing Bregman's value to potential suitors Wednesday, saying the third baseman provides "an infusion of championship blood. He's AB positive."
