A Louisiana mom was left regretting an online purchase for her daughter after quite literally failing to read the small print on the item.
Buyer's remorse is a very real prospect for shoppers today. In 2023, a Google and Ipsos poll of 1,358 U.S. adults found that around two in five Americans (42 percent) have bought something on sale they later regretted.
Angela Fraychineaud, a mom to three kids, was certainly left ruing the decision to get her 13-year-old daughter Karlie a set of Dr. Pepper-themed pajamas through a retailer on TikTok because she thought they were "cute."
"They had different sayings and pictures all over them," Fraychineaud told Newsweek. "I didn't really read it."
Purchased as a Christmas gift, Karlie's initial reaction on the morning of December 25 as she opened the present was one of delight.
It was a thoughtful purchase, after all. "She immediately loved them because she's a huge Dr. Pepper fan," Fraychineaud said.
That initial joy turned to one of mild confusion, however, when Karlie began to read some of the slogans featured on the nightwear.
A little later on Christmas Day, she decided to highlight the issue to her mom.
"Then that night, she put them on and pointed it out to me. We all laughed. I was like 'whoops,'" Fraychineaud said.
The woman went on to highlight the issue in a video posted to her TikTok account angela_fray in which Karlie models the pajamas and highlights the issues.
The most prominent one comes in the form of a slogan on the front of the nightwear that reads:: "I'm either drinking Dr. Pepper, about to drink Dr. Pepper thinking about drinking Dr. Pepper or p****** out kidney stones."
Fraychineaud's video highlighting what happened took off on TikTok, amassing over 2.6 million views and counting. "I purchased from tiktok shop and I didn't look close enough at the print. I just knew my Dr. Pepper [loving] daughter would love these pajamas," she wrote alongside the clip.
Some offered similar tales of online retail woe. "My daughter ordered some shorts off Temu. they had cartoon strippers and money all over them," one user wrote.
"One time I bought Hello Kitty hoodies for my daughter and one of the hoodies she was holding a pew pew," another commented with a third adding: "My mom got me ones with soccer balls on them one year and didn't realize they said Corona the beer."
Despite the minor mishap, the good news is that Karlie has no issues with what's written on the pajamas. "She is keeping them," Fraychineaud said.
Though she might have regretted not properly reading before purchase, Fraychineaud was able to see the funny side of it all. "I hope everyone who saw my video got a good laugh," she said. "We sure did."
