A frightening video from India shows a dog being violently attacked by a leopard.
The CCTV footage shows a leopard attacking a pet Labrador outside a hotel in Rajasthan, in northwestern India, on November 14.
The owner of Forest Eco Lodge in Mount Abu, Mala Shah, told Storyful that her dog, Rocky, was let outside around 7:30 a.m. to go to the bathroom. However, after a short time, she heard fighting and commotion.
"I jumped out of my bed and screamed, seeing a leopard holding Rocky," she said. "The leopard heard me and ran away."
Newsweek has contacted Mala Shah for comment via email.
NDTV reports that the incident happened around 8 a.m.
The clip is over six minutes long and starts with Rocky, a black Labrador, making his way outside, before the leopard is suddenly seen pouncing toward him.
The wildcat jumps at Rocky's neck and pins the dog down as its jaws remain locked on him. A fight ensues as Rocky is seen struggling to break free of the leopard as the cat keeps Rocky down.
About 40 seconds into the video, the leopard can be seen releasing Rocky after the dog had been struggling, following the screams of the dog's frightened owner. Shah can be seen opening the door and running outside to get rid of the leopard.
Rocky momentarily goes in the direction of the leopard after managing to stand up, but soon makes his way inside to safety. Another angle of the incident shows how the leopard sneaked up on Rocky, creeping behind him in the garden before pouncing.
A third angle shows the leopard lurking around the garden, looking around with its ears stood up.
According to India's Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, there are around 13,874 leopards in the country. That is compared to 250,000 in the world, according to Britanica.
Leopards are mostly found in South Asia and Sub Saharan Africa, as well as parts of Southeast Asia. They are recognizable for their unique yellowish and black fur.
They are known as predators, with close relatives in the animal kingdom being lions, tigers and jaguars.
People took to social media to share their thoughts and reactions to the video. "I hope the poor baby is ok," said Jessica on YouTube.
"that was soooo hard to watch," said @joanndeland7969.
