In further proof that the bob haircut has a perennial chokehold on the celebrity style set, Natalie Portman has used her latest red carpet appearance to hard-launch her allegiance to the short side. In a hair transformation we’re attributing to her recent divorce from French choreographer Benjamin Millepied, Portman unveiled her textured crop at the Ballons d’Or, a celebration of European football, at the Théâtre du Châtele in Paris.
The actress and co-owner of Angel City FC, Los Angeles’s professional women’s soccer team, was dressed by Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri for the occasion. She wore a floor-skimming navy blue velvet dress, a piece that debuted in the Maison’s Pre-Fall 2024 runway show hosted in New York earlier this year.
Of course, given that Portman was still sporting her mid-length locks during her previous public appearance at English primatologist and nonagenarian Jane Goodall’s conference at UNESCO Paris days earlier, we need to uncover further details about the salon and stylist responsible for the gorgeous chop.
Unlike other bob iterations sported by Portman—see: the creamy balayage look she wore at the 2020 Oscars or the iconic straight style worn in 1994’s Léon: The Professional—this version feels more radical.
For starters, Portman has chosen to show off her natural curl pattern, something Angelina Jolie also did recently while unveiling her new Maria Callas biopic, Maria, in Los Angeles. Portman also parted her hair a little off-centre, leaving a few strands to delicately sweep her face and add a little drama to the otherwise lived-in look.
As the temperature warms up in the Southern Hemisphere, the cut is a gentle reminder to begin booking in your own summer trims to shed your winter layers and split-ends. But, it’s also a moment to reflect on just why the bob remains so prevalent. Not too long ago Victoria Beckham, Nicola Peltz, Lily Collins and Selena Gomez all traded in their signature lengths for varying shorter snips, too. Something must be in the (h)air in Hollywood…
